A missile fired by the Houthis hit the grounds of Israel’s biggest airport, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to promise to act against the organization.
“We attacked in the past, we will attack in the future” is how Netanyahu stated in a social media video threatening to launch attacks on the organization.
The Iran-backed militia launched the missile from Yemen, and according to Israeli officials, it landed Sunday morning close to Ben Gurion airport’s main terminal.
According to Israeli media, which cited emergency personnel, the explosion injured four individuals, and two more were hurt when they were traveling to a shelter.
The Israeli airport was declared “no longer safe for air travel” by Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree in a nationally broadcast announcement.
“Anyone that hits us, we will hit them seven times stronger,” said Israel Katz, the country’s defense minister.
Unconfirmed video that was uploaded online seems to show adjacent traffic pulling over to seek shelter as a missile landed, forming a black smoke cloud close to the airport, which is located outside of Tel Aviv.
After momentarily stopping flights, the airport has since reopened; nevertheless, Sunday’s flights to and from the airport were canceled by a number of major airlines, including Lufthansa, Air France, and Delta.
As the missile got closer, sirens were sounded across the nation, and the Israeli Air Force said that it was looking into why it was unable to intercept it.
Yair Hetzroni, the senior Israeli police commander, showed reporters a hole created by the missile’s impact. According to airport officials, the missile fell next to a road next to a parking lot in Terminal 3.
Hetzroni stated that there was no major damage and that “you can see the scene right behind us here, a hole that opened up with a diameter of tens of meters and also tens of meters deep.”
Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with ministers and defense officials on Sunday to discuss a response, according to local media. The Houthis, a Yemeni rebel group supported by Iran, have been attacking Israel with missiles in solidarity with Hamas in Gaza, but it is rare for one to pass through Israel’s advanced air defenses. The group has also been attacking ships in the Red Sea, to which the US has responded by launching a bombing campaign against it, with assistance from the UK.
