Trump plane gift controversy

Concerns Rise Over Security, Cost of Jet Gifted for Temporary Use as Air Force One

The potential conversion of a luxury jet, reportedly gifted to former President Donald Trump for temporary use as Air Force One, has sparked intense scrutiny over its feasibility, cost, and national security implications.

Experts estimate that transforming the jet to meet the standards required for presidential use could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The extensive upgrades—including secure communications, defensive systems, and surveillance countermeasures—could take up to two years to complete.

Republican lawmakers have expressed alarm over potential espionage threats, while Democratic leaders point to serious counterintelligence risks. The debate centers on the origin of the aircraft and the possibility of foreign access to sensitive U.S. systems.

Trump has described the aircraft as a “gift” to replace the aging Air Force One fleet temporarily. However, national security officials stress that any plane carrying the president must be stripped down and rebuilt with top-tier defense and communication systems. This includes shielding from electromagnetic pulses, secure access to military command systems, and the ability to remain airborne for extended periods during emergencies.

Estimates of the jet’s value range between $250 million and $400 million, but the retrofitting process could push total costs far higher. Multiple government agencies, including the Secret Service, CIA, and NSA, would need to be involved to ensure compliance with presidential transport standards.

While Boeing is under contract to deliver new Air Force One aircraft by 2027, Trump has suggested the gifted jet could serve as a temporary solution. Yet officials familiar with the process argue that the risks and complexities involved make such a transition unlikely in the near term.

The legal framework for accepting the aircraft is still being debated, and it remains unclear when, or if, the handover will happen.
